Departure

June 30
The train trip was easy once again. It's incredibly how 30 hours can fly by so easily. The hours at Erlian while they changed the wheels with us on the train was a little grating, but this was a minor blip. I guess it can be partially explained by 9.5 hours sleep! I woke up at 10am on the second day after a long, deep sleep which felt great. There was a good variety of scenery, with many travellers hanging by the windows to take pictures.

Rediscovering heat

July 1,2 2007
Coming back to Beijing we walked into a furnace. The place was hot, it was humid, it was earning all sorts of sweat-inducing adjectives and we couldn't get some icy water quickly enough!

After a shower we head off to another Hu Tong district north of the city centre (near Beihai park). We'd heard it was more touristy but this area has been completely overrun with Westerners. A bit lacking in character and also a lot of rip-off prices. Not to be too negative, the buildings and waterways were nice.

Met up with Mike, who was also in Beijing, in the evening for a drink. It was a good way to finish off the trip, rehashing memories.

The next morning wasn't such a good way to finish anything off. We spent a hot and thirsty 90 minutes looking for the airport shuttle at Beijing Train Station. That was horrible. Then Beijing airport is a new ordeal in itself! Jam packed, understaffed and in desperate need of refurbishment, I have no idea how it's going to handle the Olympics. This day was the worst part of the trip which is in the context of things is good; although uncomfortable we suffered little.
