Part 2 | Part 4

The Ball
The Sherrin has been the ball brand of choice forever and a day. So much so that you often hear people calling other brands Sherrin, much in the way of Kleenex with tissues.
The Umpire

Umpire pictured with one of my favourite players ever, James Hird.
Umpires are often referred to as the “white maggots” based on their previous history of wearing white uniforms up until a year ago. They then changed their uniforms to green, orange, red and pink based on whatever was going that day. I personally think this is an absolute disgrace.
There’s three umpires on the ground and they are extremely fit workhorses. I don’t know of any sport which comes close to the fitness demands on an Aussie Rules umpire during an ordinary match.

Goal Umpires wear pants and a hat. The hat helps protect their eyes from the sun as they look upwards because it’s there job to declare whether a ball has gone through the goals or not. They also decide if it has been touched before it crossed the goal line by somoene’s hands.
When it’s a goal they indicate with both hands as pictured above. When it’s a behind they just use the one hand. They then wave two flags for a goal, one for a behind, to indicate to the goal umpire at the other end of the ground what just happened. They then tally their sheets at the end of the day to make sure they have got the scoring right. The flags are only really necessary to tell whether it has been a behind or if the ball has gone out of bounds
Typical Scoreline
Geelong 21.10.136
St Kilda 13.16.94
This was the scoreline for my team, St Kilda, last week. This was a fairly high scoring game and on average, matches tend to have smaller deficits in the final result.
