Tim’s blog has a great post about his love theorem. It’s completely half-baked and completely hilarious.
Nigel’s talking about relationships a lot which is good. At least someone is. Some very good points and the man is talking straight.
Both Tim and Nigel are examples of the good blogging that some of my friends are doing. While not many of my friends blog, the ones that do are generally ok.
This post was spawned out of something else.. reading a blog post that was completely obvious.
No offence to J who wrote the post but what is it about church and its amazing ability to state the obvious? I’m like… I can’t remember the last time I was in church and heard an original thought.
Sometimes what they say is GOOD - my Young Adults pastor Dan Lian gave a good message on Wednesday. I don’t forget the exact phraseology but he was talking about living for something above the petty distractions.
It was definitely passionate.
But the thing I like about Nigel’s and Tim’s blogs is that .. I haven’t heard this stuff before. I have actually learnt stuff from their blog - about them, about their unique perspective.
I’m so sick of hearing someone saying something that sounds like what ’should’ be said. How about what you actually think!
Mark Conner, my senior pastor, has a blog. His latest post is called don’t quit. It’s cool to see insights into his personal life, or the minutiae of his trips overseas which we don’t hear much of normally. His spiritual posts very much resemble his sermons. His sermons are fine but are much suited to the masses - easy to swallow, easy to chew, etc. I don’t have a problem with that. Lowest common denominator is just a fact of life. I’d love to see him take his blog to a new place, to really delve into issues, to talk about his own doubts, to get into the Bible some more. In a sentence, It’d be so cool to see it as more of a personal mouthpiece as opposed to an official mouthpiece.
Occasionally in sermons you feel that little bit of underside of vulnerability and doubt in Mark. That’s what I’m drawn too because I’m not a perfectly polished Christian, I’m a very… very rough work right now and I don’t relate to perfection I relate to humanity.
It’d be nice to see more topics engaged with and discussed, and less left in the ‘too hard’ or ‘too controversial’ baskets.
During Paul Molyneux’s sermon my girlfriend whispered to me that he could use one of my tailored shirts. I have been thinking about this sort of thing on and off and haven’t yet talked to them about it. Firstly, I would never sell a pastor a shirt for profit. I would only sell at cost, or even just give them one. If someone knows Mark I’d be more than happy to give him a tailored shirt and measure him to contribute to his ministry in some small way. I haven’t yet done anything about it because I just feel as if I’d be condemned for trying to make money out of the church in some small way… by getting some sort of cross promotion? I would be very uncomfortable, for example, if a pastor got on stage and said “hey look at the new tailored shirt Matthew Newton made for me.” Mark would be a fantastic challenge because he has colouring that I have not yet dealt with - not only this, but the shirt would also have to look good on a tv camera.
The cost price of my shirts is currenty fluctuating a lot because of the dollar.
If the shirt was mentioned that’d be ok but not in the context of myself. My conscience would simply not allow it. (I have no idea how those guys who pump Word and Koorong full of exploitative merchandise justify what they are doing.)
