The Weather Radar

This post is for people who live in metropolitan areas in Australia.

Since starting work, I’ve noticed that it’s a bit of a fad amongst my colleagues to have a window open with the current weather radar images (http://www.bom.gov.au). They also have a 4-image loop so you can predict which way the rain is heading.

This is so useful. The other day I was going to go play golf but the weather was really ominous so I went and checked the radar and I could see the rain was going to slip past the golf course. The result was 2 hours of fun with a good friend of mine.

When I finished work yesterday I checked the radar and saw rain was about to hit, so I stayed in the office. I waited 2 minutes and then the rain hit really good. As soon as it was obviously passing on the radar I stepped out and took the 15 minute walk to my car. Not too long after I started driving, it rained again.

Given how effective it is to use that tool to prevent rain, I’m surprised more people don’t do that!

Online Storage

So, I’ve been asked to look at another online backup website called iDrive. The first thing about this website is that intriguingly it is blocked at my work… so I had to go to another computer to see it.

This is a really good deal. They offer encrypted storage of the first 2GB for free. (That’s right, for free.) (For free.) They also offer unlimited storage for US$4.95 a month which is nothing much really.

Looking through their features reveals an extraordinarily impressive service. They offer back-up every 10 minutes on frequently changing files. There’s also no limits on file sizes either.

Overall it’s a very professional looking website. They also have the cojones to put comparisons with their competitors directly on their front page. Is that confidence in the product or what?

I must admit, I’m sold. I have a growing amount of data on my websites and that 2GB thing seems like my cup o tea.

Guess what I’m doing in 4 hours time!

I’m going to see bits of dead people. Sounds like a ball! And here’s the kicker : it’s a first date.

The exhibition features more than 400 authentic human specimens including 18 aesthetically posed whole body specimens along with individual organs and transparent slices. Until now this type of real anatomical detailed display was the sole domain of medical students and practitioners.

The exhibition aims to inform the public about the value of healthy lifestyle choices and the consequences of harmful habits. Side by side comparative display of healthy & diseased specimens - with various ailments caused by smoking, cancer and high blood pressure tographically illustrate the point.

I’m looking forward to it.
