Best contest in history

David Airey - logo design extraordinaire - has just done the incredible and launched probably the best contest I have ever seen/

He has a popular and rapidly growing blog (1831 people accessing his feed every day) but it appears that I have massively under-estimated his clout in the field because he’s got so many prizes from his associates around the web that he’s had to come up with a Gold, Silver and Bronze prize.

The Gold Prize:

* Professional logo from David Airey. Add a touch of professionalism to your business with one of my logo designs.
* Custom WordPress theme design from Nate Whitehill of Nate Whitehill dot Com. It’s vital to set yourself apart from the crowd, and Nate will help a great deal with your very own custom WordPress theme.
* Personal marketing / advertising plan from Maki of Dosh Dosh. Maki is an expert where blog advertising is concerned, and he is kindly donating his time to help you make the most of your new custom blog.
* One year’s hosting and blog setup from John Boardley of I Love Typography. John has kindly donated his time and will do everything you need to get your new custom blog hosted on one of Media Temple’s dedicated servers.
* Signed copy of Blogging Tips by Lorelle VanFossen of Lorelle on WordPress. I bought this book myself, and it contains excellent blogging tips for beginners to pros.”

The Feedburner chicklet.. why most people are reading it wrongly.

I just mentioned that David Airey has 1831 subscribers on his Feedburner chicklet. Nearly 100% of bloggers, readers go the easy route and just assume that this means he’s got .. 1831 subscribers. Well, have I got news for you. They’re wrong. It’s actually higher. The Feedburner chicklet measures readers on a rolling basis - 24 hrs as I understand - so if the whole world suddenly stops reading David for a whole day in a row, his count will suddenly drop to 0. (Not going to happen but I’m trying to make a point.)

I only access his feed maybe every 3 days as I’m seriously struggling to keep up. How many other people are like me? Who knows, but I’m sure there’s a lot! I don’t know anything abut statistics but I’d say the true figure is closer to 15-25% above what Feedburner is saying.

Advertising on Feeds

John Chow is charging $200+ a month for a link on his Feed, and has four advertisers. He has 8000 on his Feedburner chicklet. DumbLittleMan.com is charging $600 for just one space and has 65,000. If you have a good enough ad …..why not?

More blogs getting the chop

Yep, more blogs getting deleted from my reader. This is great news as it means my time has suddenly become valuable. Yippee-roo. That is, in the past couple of weeks during my redesign of Jonk’s Bargains it has changed the way I prganise my time. Before I do anything I will contemplate its true value to me. Some blogs are written by my friends, or friends of friends, and help me keep socially connected in the blogosphere.. so important. So I keep those. Others are highly valuable in my work on Jonk’s or Matnewton.com. So I keep those. Others let me take a 5 minute breather and nearly all of these are getting the chop because it used to be 60, 120 minutes and I just don’t want to spend that anymore.

More on that free bike

Well, I’ve been given the bike offered to me on this blog. It’s great! I had to spend $10 on an inner tube for the back wheel and the gears are a little clunky but I’m very happy with it and intend to go out regularly. This should be an easy intention to keep because I love riding.

So, any new blogs coming?

Yep, but not any of the ones I have been brainstorming about. Not worth the energy given low anticipated rewards.

A new blog for Jonk’s Bargains is coming… give me three weeks. And I’m going be starting a new Mat blog as well. I think you’ll love the domain name. :) I had been tossing up between two options and have settled, buying it tonight.

Mat.
