My tailored shirt business offers three basic options for shirt pleats including the side pleat which is pictured above.

The idea of shirt pleats is that they create extra room in the back of the shirt to assist in movement while performing simple tasks. They are not mandatory in any sense, just simply part of the function of a dress or business shirt.

Pleats are part of getting a shirt to fit right. If you wear ill-fitting clothes people subconsciously assume you can’t afford to buy things that actually do fit. It’s important to at least have the appearance of being successful in your business dealings as people will be more likely to grant you continuing success.

The differing body shapes of men lead to different needs with pleats. Side pleats are for men with wider shoulders. Box pleats are for men with wider waists. I generally recommend getting a pleat as it creates a little bit of visual interest.

An increasing trend recently is that of the double side pleat (of which I have been unable to find a demonstrating photo and I apologise.) This is the same as that pictured above except there’s an extra pleat on each side.

Double Side pleats create a lot of room in a shirt. In actual fact they also serve a specific purpose just the same as a Side or Box pleat. They are designed for larger men.

Many thin men have of late been choosing shirts with this and it doesn’t look good - it creates a billowing effect at the back which makes the garment appear ill-fitting which is bad news.
